to avoid being inspeated by H.M.3. "Tung ON" on 29th

July, on her way up river to Thampos, where she discharged

6,000 cases of kerosine besides other goods on 31st July,

The Bear Admiral, Yangtse, reported this ship was searched

at Shanghai but no arms were found.

On the other hand He Han Min, Minister of Foreign Affairs in the present Canton Government has expressed

his non-adherence to Bolshevism, but admits the Government

has received assistance from them for which he was most

grateful, and other reports indicate that the inssians

are to be got rid of by the 16th September.

The Mussian leaders however appear to be endeavouring

to gain control of moh fighting forums as exist and are

also the chief source of supply of fuel and munitions t

for the Canton Government, and the proposal to get rid of them may be so light a tank.

Attempts to form a Soviet Government will probably be foraibly opposed from more moderate quarters, by General Li Fook Lam and others, and the latest reports received indicate that defensive measures are being taken in Honan. The advent of fighting between the extremists on the one hand and the moderates would not be unexpected and may prove to be the solution of the present state of impasse.

Referring to paragraph 16 of my former letter quoted, additional progress has been made with the earth work on Blenheim Point and there now seems to be no doubt that

this is a new gun emplacement,

On Saturday, 1st August, at one of the forts at Boca Tigris a gun's crew were observed under training which has not been usual for a very considerable time, and additional guards were observed in several places.
